If a development, mining or prospecting application affects you, the law lets you register as an interested and affected party. Registration puts your name on the record for that application and entitles you to information, notices and the chance to comment.
When you can register as an interested and affected party
You can register for any application that is subject to a public participation process under NEMA, including prospecting and mining applications under the MPRDA. Landowners, occupiers, neighbours, community members and organisations may all register.
How to register
Find the published notice for the application. It carries the reference number, the contact person and the address for registration. Send your details in writing to that contact and ask to be registered as an interested and affected party. Keep a copy of your request.
What registration gives you
Once registered, you receive the reports and updates for the application. You can submit written comments and objections within the comment period, which must run for at least 30 days. The applicant must record your comments and respond to them.
