Quick summary
- A SASSA reapplication is only required in specific cases, not every month.
- SASSA reviews your eligibility automatically each month using current data.
- You must reapply if you cancelled your application or your file was closed.
- Reconfirmation is requested by SASSA from time to time and is not the same as a full reapplication.
- Both reapplication and reconfirmation are done through srd.sassa.gov.za.
A SASSA reapplication is one of the most misunderstood parts of the SRD R370 grant system. Many beneficiaries believe they must reapply every month. They do not. SASSA reviews each beneficiary’s eligibility automatically every month using SARS, UIF, NSFAS and bank data.
You only need to reapply in specific circumstances. Knowing the difference between reapplication, reconfirmation and automatic review saves you time and prevents missed payments.
When you need to submit a SASSA reapplication
Reapplication is required if any of the following apply:
- You cancelled your previous SRD application
- Your file was closed because you did not reconfirm when asked
- You were declined for a long stretch and want to start fresh
- A new SRD grant cycle is announced by the Minister of Social Development
- Your circumstances changed and you want to start over with updated information
If your profile is still active and you are receiving the grant, you do not need to reapply. Doing so unnecessarily can disrupt your payments.
What reconfirmation means
Reconfirmation is different from reapplication. SASSA asks active beneficiaries to reconfirm their personal and financial details periodically. The request is sent by SMS and through the SASSA portal.
Reconfirmation typically requires you to:
- Confirm that you are still unemployed
- Confirm your cellphone number and banking details are current
- Confirm that no new sources of income have appeared
You only reconfirm when SASSA asks. There is no fixed monthly reconfirmation requirement.
How to submit a SASSA reapplication
The reapplication is done online. There is no paper form.
Follow these steps:
- Open srd.sassa.gov.za
- Click “How do I apply?” or the application banner on the home page
- Enter your South African ID number and full names exactly as they appear on your ID
- Provide a working cellphone number registered in your name
- Enter your banking details (must be an account in your name)
- Declare that you are unemployed and not receiving any other social grant or income above the threshold
- Submit the application
Save the reference number and check your status weekly.
How long a reapplication takes
Once submitted, SASSA verifies your information against multiple databases. Approval can take from a few days to several weeks.
The system checks:
- Home Affairs records to confirm your identity
- SARS data to confirm tax status
- UIF records to confirm you are not registered as employed
- NSFAS to confirm you are not receiving student funding
- Bank records to confirm income is below the threshold
If any of these flag, your application will be declined. You then have the option to follow the SASSA appeal process.
Why reapplications get declined
The most common reasons for a declined reapplication are:
- Means test failure due to deposits above R624 per month
- UIF registration as an employed person
- NSFAS bursary record on file
- Tax registration with income above the threshold
- Identity verification failure with Home Affairs
- Bank account is not in the applicant’s name
Address the underlying issue before reapplying. Submitting the same information twice will produce the same decline.

Reapplying after a cancellation
If you cancelled your SRD application yourself, you can reapply at any time. The system does not lock you out. Treat the new application as a fresh submission.
Use the same ID, but make sure the cellphone number and banking details you enter are correct. Errors at this stage are the most common cause of delays.
What to do after reapplication
Once submitted, do not reapply again the next week if your status is still pending. Multiple reapplications confuse the system and slow down approval.
Check your status weekly using your ID number on srd.sassa.gov.za. If your status is still pending after 30 days, contact the SASSA Toll-Free Helpline at 0800 60 10 11.
A SASSA reapplication is straightforward when you submit accurate information the first time. Reapply only when you must, keep your details current, and respond to any reconfirmation request from SASSA before the deadline.
