This past weekend, Boatica Cape Town 2024 drew an impressive crowd, showcasing the dynamic growth of South Africa’s marine industry. There were over 4,000 attendees from countries like the USA, France, and Germany. The event highlighted the global appeal and potential of the blue economy.
The exhibition featured 61 exhibitors and 44 vessels, attracting marine and watersports enthusiasts from all walks of life. Alderman James Vos, Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, opened the event by emphasizing the marine manufacturing sector’s remarkable annual growth rate of 22%. He proudly announced that the industry is now valued at R4.9 billion, a significant increase from R3.2 billion. “We’re riding the wave of growth!” Vos proclaimed, underscoring the economic opportunities this growth presents for local communities.
Highlights of the event
Boatica Cape Town 2024 showcased a range of exciting vessels, including the luxurious Azimut from Boating World, exemplifying high-performance yachting. Attendees were also introduced to innovative new models like the OZEAN.19 by Clarke Marine, designed for both adventure and leisure. The award-winning Vision 444 by Vision Yachts was recognised as ‘Boat of the Year.’
The event further spotlighted Southern Wind Shipyard’s exceptional craftsmanship in luxury sailing yachts and featured the Royal Cape Yacht Club Sailing Academy, which is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of sailors. Visitors also had the chance to participate in stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and kayaking, enhancing the interactive nature of the show.

In his address, Vos declared Cape Town the world’s leading catamaran-building city, highlighting the city’s exceptional craftsmanship and innovative spirit. He introduced the ‘Job Wall,’ a new initiative aimed at connecting job seekers with opportunities in the marine sector, reinforcing the industry’s potential to drive sustainable employment.
“Our ocean economy is about more than leisure; it’s about creating jobs and embracing sustainable practices,” Vos emphasized. His closing remarks encouraged attendees to celebrate their achievements and look forward to the future, leaving them inspired to further harness the economic potential of Cape Town’s thriving marine industry.
