A suspect has been arrested in connection with the September 2025 murder of Johannesburg attorney Bouwer van Niekerk, who was gunned down inside his Saxonwold office. The Democratic Alliance welcomed the arrest on Monday but warned that justice will only be served once the people who planned, financed and authorised the killing are also prosecuted.

DA pushes SAPS to find the masterminds
DA Deputy Spokesperson on Police Ian Cameron said an arrest of an alleged hitman cannot be mistaken for justice. He called on the South African Police Service to pursue the full chain of accountability. Van Niekerk was killed by men posing as clients while accomplices waited in a getaway vehicle, pointing to a coordinated attack.
Possible link to alleged cryptocurrency scheme
Reports that Van Niekerk had received threats tied to an alleged cryptocurrency scheme suggest a wider criminal network may be behind the killing. The DA said it would monitor the case to ensure the investigation does not end with the arrested suspect.
