Bumble founder and CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd has publicly distanced the dating app from the wave of AI-generated companions, telling users on the official Bumble Instagram account that the platform will not use AI-generated openers or bios as part of its upcoming overhaul.

A move against “artificial intimacy”

In a statement published on the Bumble Instagram account, Wolfe Herd said the world is moving toward “artificial intimacy” driven by AI girlfriends, AI boyfriends and bots that flirt and message on behalf of users. She said Bumble is building the opposite.

“The future of Bumble is not about automating love. It’s about protecting connection from feeling automated in the first place. No AI openers, no AI generated bios. Real people, showing up for real,” Wolfe Herd said.

Context for the announcement

The statement follows confirmation last week that Bumble will phase out its swipe feature in a broader app redesign, with the company developing an AI assistant named Bee designed to work in the background rather than replace user interaction. Bumble’s paying user base fell 21% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026.
