DURBAN. – The eThekwini Municipality says Durban loses around 676 million litres of water every day due to ageing infrastructure and leaks, an admission made as officials faced questions in Parliament over service delivery.

Questioned in Parliament

The figure emerged during the city’s appearance before Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts, where officials were questioned on infrastructure failures, sewage spills and service delivery challenges. The city’s Ednick Msweli said its turnaround programme includes pipe replacement, leak detection and pressure management.

Beaches affected

The infrastructure problems have also caused sewage overflows along Margaret Mncadi Avenue in central Durban, temporarily closing several beaches. The municipality said repeated pump failures at the Mahatma Gandhi Pump Station, caused by debris clogging pumps, were behind the spill.
