Fuel hikes putting South African workers under severe financial pressure, warns Momentum Corporate

South Africa’s rising fuel prices are doing more than driving up transport costs. According to Momentum Corporate, fuel hikes are eroding employees’ financial resilience, increasing debt and adding emotional pressure on households already struggling with basic living expenses.

Real cost of fuel hikes goes beyond the pump

Siyasanga Kashe, Executive: Member Solutions at Momentum Corporate, says the financial burden on employees is becoming increasingly difficult to manage.

“While the national conversation surrounding fuel price hikes tends to be dominated by macroeconomic data and fluctuating exchange rates, there is a far more personal aspect to this issue,” Kashe says.

“For South Africa’s workforce, the real cost of fuel price hikes isn’t just measured in rands per litre but in the erosion of financial resilience and the mounting psychological pressure on employees.”

Survival costs outpacing inflation

Kashe points to the latest Cost of Living report from the Competition Commission, which found that survival costs are now increasing faster than general inflation.

With fuel and transport costs continuing to rise, many South Africans have little room in their budgets after covering essential expenses. Momentum Corporate says this is forcing some households to rely on high-interest debt simply to survive.

Financial stress spilling into the workplace

Momentum Corporate says the pressure is also affecting employee performance.

“Financial strain is a significant driver of presenteeism,” Kashe says. “This is where employees are physically present but emotionally detached because they are consumed by the mental load of managing debt or survival costs.”

The company warns that prolonged financial stress can contribute to burnout, absenteeism and emotional exhaustion as employees try to balance work responsibilities with financial uncertainty at home.

Short-term decisions damaging long-term security

Momentum Corporate notes that many workers are making short-term financial decisions that could damage their long-term stability, including reducing retirement contributions or accessing retirement savings early.

Employers urged to provide practical support

Kashe says employers have an increasingly important role to play in helping employees navigate these pressures.

“Employers are no longer just providers of a paycheck; they are key enablers in supporting employees through these volatile periods,” she says.

Momentum Corporate believes companies should move beyond traditional employee benefits and focus on practical support systems that provide real financial relief. This includes financial education, counselling services and benefit guidance to help employees understand the long-term consequences of short-term decisions, such as cancelling life cover to afford fuel costs.

The company also highlighted tools such as emergency savings products and pension-backed home loans as ways employees can access support without severely damaging their future financial security.

Building financial security in practice

Kashe says clearer communication around employee benefits is essential.

“By providing consistent financial education and accessible support systems, employers can ensure their workforce doesn’t just have benefits on paper, but genuine financial security in practice,” she says.

“Thriving in 2026 is not about waiting for the crisis to pass, but about building organisations and individuals who are ready for whatever comes next.”
