NSFAS allowance amounts 2026: what students receive

The NSFAS allowance amounts 2026 cover tuition for qualifying undergraduate and TVET students, plus allowances for living costs, learning materials, accommodation and transport. Knowing the exact figures helps students plan their year and spot underpayments early.

Living and learning materials

The living allowance for both university and TVET students is paid monthly and is intended to cover personal expenses, transport top-ups and basic subsistence. The annual learning materials allowance is paid as a lump sum at the start of the academic year as part of the February upfront payment.

Accommodation

For university students in private accommodation, NSFAS caps the annual accommodation allowance at the institution-determined rate. For TVET students, the accommodation allowance is tiered by location, with separate amounts for urban, peri-urban and rural areas. Private accommodation payments are now made directly to accredited providers under signed lease agreements.

Transport

Students who do not qualify for the accommodation allowance and who commute daily receive a transport allowance. TVET students who travel to and from campus receive an annual transport allowance paid in cycles.

Direct payments

Since 2024, NSFAS has paid TVET allowances directly into students’ personal bank accounts. University allowances continue to be distributed by institutions in 2026 under the university-led model extended by the NSFAS Board.
