The December festive season is a time for celebration, but it also comes with an increase in road traffic. Whether you’re traveling long distances or just heading to family gatherings, it’s important to stay safe on the roads. Here are some essential road safety tips to keep in mind during this busy time.

1. Plan your trip ahead

Before hitting the road, plan your route and check the traffic conditions. Use apps like Google Maps or Waze to stay updated on road closures, traffic jams and alternative routes. Planning ahead can save you time and stress.

2. Don’t drink and drive

With many festive celebrations, alcohol consumption increases. Never drive after drinking. Designate a sober driver or use ride-hailing services like Uber or taxis to get home safely. Drinking and driving is a major cause of accidents, especially during the holidays.

3. Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy

Make sure your vehicle is in good condition before you head out. Check the tyres, oil, brakes and lights. A pre-trip vehicle inspection can prevent breakdowns or accidents on the road.

4. Follow speed limits

During the festive season, there is often more congestion, and speed limits are there for a reason. Stick to the posted speed limits and adjust your speed according to the weather and road conditions. Driving too fast can lead to accidents, especially when roads are wet or slippery.

5. Keep a safe following distance

Maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. This gives you enough time to react if traffic suddenly slows down. A good rule of thumb is to stay at least two seconds behind the car ahead.

6. Rest if you’re tired

Long drives can be exhausting. If you feel fatigued, take breaks. Stop at rest areas, stretch and hydrate. Drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence.

7. Stay alert and avoid distractions

Put your phone away while driving. Distracted driving, whether from texting or talking on the phone, is a leading cause of accidents. Stay focused and keep your eyes on the road.

By following these road safety tips, you can help ensure that you and your loved ones have a safe and enjoyable festive season. Whether you’re heading out on a road trip or just going to visit family, always prioritise safety on the roads.
