SASSA appeal to the Independent Tribunal (ITSAA): how it works

If a SASSA reconsideration has been declined, a formal SASSA appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) is the next step. ITSAA operates independently of SASSA and adjudicates appeals against SASSA decisions.

When to use ITSAA

ITSAA is the next escalation after a SASSA reconsideration fails. You can also approach ITSAA where:

  • Your SRD R370 reconsideration has been declined.
  • You disagree with a SASSA decision on a permanent grant such as Older Persons, Disability, Child Support, Foster Child, Care Dependency or War Veterans.
  • Your grant has been suspended, lapsed or cancelled and you believe the decision is wrong.

How to lodge an appeal

For the SRD R370, appeals are lodged on the SRD portal. For other grants, an appeal can be submitted in writing to ITSAA, to the Minister of Social Development, or at any SASSA office. Include your full name, ID number, contact details, the SASSA decision reference and the reasons you believe the decision is wrong. Attach any supporting documents.

If your appeal is successful

SASSA reinstates the grant and pays any arrears for the months you were eligible. For the SRD, this means R370 per overturned month, paid as a back-pay amount into your registered account.

Free help

You do not need a lawyer to lodge an appeal. Black Sash and Legal Aid South Africa both offer free assistance with grant appeals.
