SASSA appeal to the Independent Tribunal 2026: full guide

If your reconsideration was unsuccessful, a formal SASSA appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) is the next step. ITSAA was established in 2008 and operates independently of SASSA, with a statutory mandate to adjudicate appeals within 90 days.

When to use ITSAA

ITSAA is the second tier in the SRD R370 dispute process, and the first tier for permanent grants where you disagree with a SASSA decision. You may approach ITSAA when:

  • Your SRD R370 reconsideration has been declined.
  • You disagree with a SASSA decision on a permanent grant (Older Persons, Disability, Child Support, Foster Child, Care Dependency or War Veterans).
  • Your grant has been suspended, lapsed or cancelled.

How to lodge an ITSAA appeal

  1. Submit the appeal in writing to ITSAA, the Minister of Social Development, or any SASSA office, within 90 days of receiving the SASSA outcome.
  2. For SRD R370, lodge the appeal at the SRD Appeals Electronic Platform: srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal
  3. Include your full name, ID number, contact details, the SASSA decision reference, and the reasons you believe the decision is wrong.
  4. Attach any supporting documents — medical reports, bank statements, affidavits from third parties.

How long it takes

ITSAA aims to finalise appeals within 90 days. Complex cases requiring further investigation can take longer. Track progress via the SRD portal or by contacting ITSAA directly.

Successful appeals and back-pay

If ITSAA rules in your favour, SASSA must reinstate the grant and pay any arrears for the months you were eligible. For SRD, that means R370 per overturned month, paid as a lump sum into your registered account.

Free help

Black Sash and Legal Aid South Africa both offer free assistance with grant appeals. You do not need a lawyer to lodge an ITSAA appeal — the process is designed to be accessible.
