The first 40 minutes in Cape Town have delivered exactly what many expected: a fast, physical contest with moments of brilliance from both sides.
The All Blacks came out with real intent, looking to overwhelm the DHL Stormers through relentless tempo, quick taps and rapid ball movement. It was an opening spell that tested the Stormers’ defence from the outset.
To their credit, the Stormers refused to buckle. After absorbing the early pressure, they found their rhythm and enjoyed their best period through the middle stages of the half. Their forwards began winning collisions, the attack gained confidence and they were deservedly rewarded with a try that briefly shifted the momentum.
Just when it looked as though the Stormers might head into the break with the psychological advantage, the All Blacks reminded everyone why they remain one of world rugby’s benchmark teams, striking with a crucial try before half-time.
The match is far from over.
The Stormers have shown they can compete physically and create opportunities, but the real challenge lies ahead. The All Blacks have a habit of increasing the intensity as matches progress, punishing even the smallest mistakes during the final half-hour.
If the Stormers can start the second half with the same composure they showed during their strongest spell of the first, they have every opportunity to keep this contest alive. However, discipline, accuracy and patience will be essential against a side that rarely lets teams off the hook.
The second half promises to be fascinating.
