Marathons are more than just races, they are global celebrations of endurance, determination and human spirit. From South Africa’s scenic landscapes to the world’s toughest trails, these events captivate runners and spectators alike.

Classic 26.2-mile races, like the Sanlam Cape Town and the prestigious Boston Marathon, test speed and stamina on paved routes. For adventurers, trail marathons traverse rugged terrains. South Africa’s Otter Trail Run and France’s Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) are favourites for their breathtaking views and challenging paths. Pushing limits, ultra marathons exceed the traditional distance. The Comrades Marathon in South Africa—a 90-kilometer test of endurance—is a beloved challenge. Globally, races like the Western States 100 and Barkley Marathons push even the most experienced runners to their limits.

They aren’t just about the finish line; they’re about the journey. For many, they symbolise personal growth, resilience and connection. The shared struggles and triumphs of runners create a unique camaraderie.

In 2024, Jasmin Paris etched her name into history. Tackling the infamous Barkley Marathons, a 100-mile odyssey known for its brutal demands, she became the first woman to complete it. With only 99 seconds to spare, her triumph is a testament to grit and mental fortitude.

Jasmin’s achievements extend beyond records. Her 2019 victory at the Spine Race, where she shattered the course record by 12 hours, inspired countless women. “I did it for myself, but also for women everywhere,”. This reminds us that the marathon spirit transcends sport—it empowers.

From iconic city streets to uncharted trails, marathons offer something for everyone. Lace up and embrace the adventure—because every step tells a story.
