Kickstart your day with energy and focus by spending just five minutes stretching. Morning stretches improve flexibility, circulation and mood. Best of all, they’re quick and easy. Here are some simple moves to get you going.
1. Cat-cow stretch begin on all fours. Inhale as you arch your back, lifting your head and tailbone toward the ceiling (cow). Exhale as you round your spine, tucking your chin and pelvis (cat). Repeat 5-8 times. This stretch wakes up your spine and boosts blood flow.
2. Standing forward fold stand with your feet hip-width apart. Hinge at your hips and fold forward, letting your head and arms hang. Keep your knees slightly bent. Feel the stretch in your hamstrings and lower back. Hold for 15-30 seconds, then slowly rise.
3. Side stretch stand tall and clasp your hands overhead. Lean to one side, keeping your arms straight. Hold for 15 seconds, then switch sides. This move stretches your obliques and lengthens your torso.
4. Seated spinal twist sit cross-legged or with your legs extended. Place your right hand behind you and your left hand on your right knee. Gently twist your torso to the right, looking over your shoulder. Hold for 15 seconds, then switch sides. This twist energises your core and releases tension.
5. Downward dog from all fours, lift your hips toward the ceiling, creating an inverted “V” shape. Keep your heels reaching toward the floor. This pose stretches your shoulders, hamstrings, and calves. Hold for 20-30 seconds.
