Choosing the right bank is an important decision that can impact your daily financial activities, savings and overall financial well-being. With so many banking options available, it can be difficult to know where to start. I’ll share how I chose my bank, the factors I considered and the key boxes that a bank needs to tick to make the cut.
1. Convenience and accessibility
The first thing I looked at was convenience. I needed a bank with a wide network of branches and ATMs. For me, accessibility is key, especially when it comes to withdrawing cash, depositing funds or just needing face-to-face assistance when necessary. Banks like Standard Bank and ABSA have extensive branch and ATM networks across the country, making them ideal for those who prefer in-person banking.
For digital convenience, I needed a strong online banking platform and a mobile app that was easy to use and allowed me to complete everyday tasks like transferring money, paying bills or checking my account balance. FNB has an excellent mobile app that allows users to do almost everything they would at a branch and the FNB Banking App is regularly ranked as one of the best in South Africa.
2. Fees and charges
The next major factor for me was bank fees. I was looking for a bank that offered affordable and transparent pricing, particularly for monthly account fees, ATM withdrawals and electronic payments. It’s important to understand all the associated charges to avoid surprises. Some banks, like Capitec, offer low-cost banking with no monthly fees for certain account types, which made them very appealing for my budget.
Additionally, I looked for a bank that had competitive interest rates on savings accounts and offered incentives like cashback or rewards for spending on debit or credit cards. ABSA and FNB are well-known for offering great rewards programs and competitive interest rates on savings accounts, which factored into my decision.
3. Customer service and support
Excellent customer service was another consideration. I wanted a bank that made it easy to contact them if there was an issue or if I needed assistance. Whether it’s through their helplines, email or in-branch support, having access to efficient, friendly, and professional service was important to me.
Nedbank is known for its excellent customer service, with a reputation for attentive, helpful staff at branches, as well as responsive online support. This was a major box ticked for me, as banking should always feel secure and reassuring.
4. Online and mobile banking features
Since online banking is a must these days, I considered security and ease of use in the mobile and internet banking systems. I needed a platform that offered two-factor authentication for extra security, along with an easy-to-navigate interface. Standard Bank and Nedbank both offer secure and user-friendly online banking platforms, which made them contenders in my decision-making process.
5. Financial products and services
Depending on your financial goals, the range of financial products a bank offers can be a deciding factor. Whether it’s personal loans, insurance, credit cards or home loans, I wanted a bank that offered a comprehensive range of services to help me achieve my financial goals. FNB, for example, offers a wide range of services from insurance to investment products, while Capitec is known for offering simple, straightforward services with easy-to-understand loan options.
6. Reputation and trustworthiness
Finally, trust was crucial. I wanted to ensure the bank I chose had a solid reputation and I looked at their financial stability and customer reviews. Some banks, like Nedbank and ABSA, have been around for a long time and have a strong history of stability, which gave me confidence in their reliability.
Choosing a bank involves considering a variety of factors, such as accessibility, fees, customer service and security. For me, finding a bank that offered both convenience and low costs was key. Banks like Capitec for low fees, FNB for mobile banking, and Standard Bank for their branch network were strong contenders. Ultimately, the right bank for you will depend on your unique needs, so it’s worth comparing a few options to find the one that ticks all the boxes.
