Hundreds of runners, families and supporters gathered at Curro The Blyde on Youth Day, 16 June 2026, for the highly anticipated Curro Street Mile, powered by ASICS. The event transformed the streets around the school into a vibrant showcase of speed, determination and community spirit. More than 900 athletes, some as young as 7 years old, competed over the iconic one-mile distance.

Fast-paced racing on the streets

The street mile is a unique event for middle distance runners. Athletes get to compete on a fast pace surface with the course lined with spectators for encouragement.

From the youth races to the elite competitions, spectators were treated to impressive tactical races with thrilling finishes. Youth day was the perfect setting for this athletic showcase with its festive atmosphere.

A new continental record

Continuing his impressive form this year, 16 year old Tiisetso Malungane of Curro Hazeldean, set the course alight! Leading from the start, he produced the fastest mile ever recorded by a 16-year-old on African soil, stopping the clock at 04:03.85.

This was another stand-out performance for a young man who has broken records across the 800 m, 1500 m and 3000 m in the last year. Malungane is most definitely an athlete to follow for the future.

Elite athletes bring the fire

Both the Elite Women and Men’s races brought fireworks from South Africa’s top middle distance stars. The Elite Women podium was a star-studded affair with the 1500 m champion, Karabo More taking the gold in 04:49.58. Glenrose Xaba (national 10 km and 21 km record holder) took the silver in 04:51.34 and Carina Swiegers (the 3000 m steeple chase champion) completed the podium with the bronze. More than a mile

The Curro ASICS street mile brought more than 900 athletes together to race in a festive and inspiring setting. It was a perfect celebration of Youth Day with elite athletes competing in close proximity to youth athletes; encouraging them to dream big.

‘This is more than just a race. It is a celebration of athletics in its purest form one mile, no track, no barriers, just raw talent and speed through the streets,’ – Cindy van der Merwe, Curro Sport Portfolio Manager.
