WESTERN CAPE. – Incidents of “foreign objects” have been reported in packets of chips and other food packaging in Groot-Brakrivier and Friemersheim in the Garden Route.

Andrew Stroebel, the executive mayor of the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM), stated in a report that the municipality, SAPS, local municipal law enforcement, and other stakeholders are aware of the incidents. An investigation is underway to determine the facts. The SAPS informed the GRDM about the incidents after reports were filed at Groot-Brakrivier police station.

“The GRDM is committed to ensuring that food sold to the public is safe for consumption. We assure the public that we take this matter very seriously and have immediately alerted all officials to the situation. Public health and safety are a priority,” Stroebel said.

Regular operations are conducted at various informal food vendors, one of which is scheduled for today. Stakeholders include the police, local municipal law enforcement, and the Department of Home Affairs.

“Further information on the incident will be released at a later stage.”
