SAHRC sounds alarm over KZN xenophobia attacks targeting foreign nationals

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has called for urgent intervention over the latest KZN xenophobia attacks, warning that the violence threatens both constitutional values and social cohesion.

The Commission said it was “deeply alarmed” by reports and video footage circulating on social media that show violent incidents targeting foreign nationals in KwaZulu-Natal. It has called on the Minister of Police and relevant departments to act swiftly to protect those affected and to put preventive measures in place in other provinces.

Foreign nationals in some Durban areas have sought refuge at police stations, signalling how severe the situation has become. The SAHRC reminded authorities that South Africa’s Bill of Rights protects everyone in the country, regardless of nationality.
