KIMBERLEY. – MTN is investing R480 million to expand its 5G and 4G networks across the Northern Cape and Free State, aiming to improve connectivity in towns and rural communities.

Where the upgrades land

In the Northern Cape, planned upgrades focus on Kimberley, Upington, Kuruman and De Aar, with the company aiming to extend 5G coverage to 75% of the province by 2026 while strengthening 4G stability. In the Free State, the target is 82% 5G coverage.

Why it matters

The company said extending its footprint, especially in rural and farming communities, would improve access to online learning, digital platforms and economic opportunities. The investment forms part of MTN’s wider national infrastructure strategy unveiled earlier this year.
