NSFAS update for May 2026: accommodation payments released

The NSFAS update for May 2026 centres on two developments: the release of private accommodation payments for university students, and the closing of the 2026 TVET Trimester 2 application window.

Private accommodation payments released

NSFAS confirmed in a statement on 11 May 2026 that private accommodation payments for universities were released on Thursday, 7 May 2026. Accommodation providers banking with First National Bank received funds immediately on release; providers with other banks may have experienced minor interbank delays.

According to NSFAS, three major accommodation disbursements during the quarter totalled over R1.1 billion and benefited more than 100 000 students. The scheme also confirmed that 95% of accommodation providers listed on its solution partner portals have had their banking details verified and are now in the direct payment system.

What students should check

Students in private accommodation should confirm with their landlord that the payment has been received, and that a signed lease agreement and confirmed funding status are on file with NSFAS. NSFAS noted that valid, signed lease agreements remain a prerequisite for payment.

TVET Trimester 2 closed

The 2026 TVET Trimester 2 application window opened on 6 May 2026 and closed on 18 May 2026. The next opportunity for TVET students is Semester 2, opening 1 July 2026 and closing 17 July 2026, along with the second intake for occupational programmes.
