Brazilian held at OR Tambo with R8.7m cocaine haul

The OR Tambo cocaine arrest of a 26-year-old Brazilian national has highlighted the airport’s role as a transit point for transnational drug syndicates. Police intercepted the suspect on arrival from Brazil on Sunday 26 April 2026, after intelligence officers flagged the inbound flight. Officers found multiple blocks of cocaine valued at R8.7 million inside the suspect’s luggage.

Cocaine concealed in luggage at OR Tambo

SAPS confirmed the cocaine was wrapped and hidden inside the suspect’s luggage during a routine search. The interception forms part of ongoing intelligence-driven operations targeting transnational drug trafficking networks moving through South Africa’s largest port of entry.

Court appearance and ongoing operations

The suspect was scheduled to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 28 April 2026 on charges of drug trafficking. Police at OR Tambo have recorded several similar interceptions in recent months, with SAPS reporting more than 27 alleged Brazilian traffickers arrested at the airport between 2025 and 2026.
