Parrot chicks hatched from eggs intercepted during an alleged wildlife smuggling attempt are now being given a second chance.
The eggs were intercepted at OR Tambo International Airport as part of an investigation into alleged organised wildlife crime.
According to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment the eggs were being transported in improvised incubators.
Some of the eggs have since hatched and the chicks that survived are receiving specialised care.
Minister David Maynier said the case highlighted the scale and sophistication of illegal wildlife trafficking.
