As Cape Town embraces the innovative initiative led by Young Urbanists with the transformation of Bree Street into a pedestrian-friendly zone, it promises to redefine how residents interact with their urban environment. Set to commence on October 27, as part of Design Week South Africa, this initiative invites locals to experience a fresh perspective on their streets every Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm.
A new vision for urban space
Inspired by the successful @openstreetscapetown movement, the closure of Bree Streets which includes Shortmarket Street, encourages residents to walk, cycle, skate, and connect with their community without the usual distractions of traffic. This initiative aligns with Transportation Month and aims to foster a culture of safety and inclusivity. It offers a unique opportunity to explore what a more pedestrian-centric Cape Town could look like.
Discovering local spots
Among the local gems along this vibrant stretch, fable cocktail bar stands out. It is renowned for its inventive cocktails and chic ambiance. Fable offers a perfect pit stop for those enjoying a leisurely stroll down Bree Street. Just a stone’s throw away is Billy’s Barbershop, a beloved local spot.
