The collection process is free, requires no application form, and the card is activated immediately. SASSA Black Card collection is open to all beneficiaries who still hold a SASSA Gold Card and must switch before the 31 August 2026 deadline.

Find your nearest SASSA Black Card collection point
Dial *120*355# on any cellphone to receive an SMS with the nearest collection points in your province. The service is free and works on any cellphone, including non-smartphones.
What to bring
- Your valid 13-digit bar-coded South African ID, or a temporary ID from Home Affairs

Collecting on someone else’s behalf
If a beneficiary cannot attend in person, a proxy can collect on their behalf. The proxy must bring their own valid ID, a copy of the beneficiary’s ID, and a signed SASSA proxy letter from the beneficiary. Postbank offers a home visit programme for bedridden beneficiaries. Phone the Postbank helpline on 0800 53 54 55 to request a home visit.
After SASSA Black Card collection
The card is activated immediately. Any balance on your old card transfers automatically. Test the card at the till before leaving the retailer by doing a balance check or a small cash-back transaction. If anything is wrong, phone Postbank on 0800 53 54 55 immediately.
