A SASSA proxy procedure allows a nominated third party to collect a grant payment, a replacement card or a new Postbank Black Card on behalf of a beneficiary who cannot attend in person. The SASSA proxy procedure requires specific documents and is intended for beneficiaries who are bedridden, hospitalised, very elderly or otherwise unable to visit a SASSA office or collection point.
Who can act as a SASSA proxy
A SASSA proxy is typically a family member, neighbour, caregiver or close friend nominated by the beneficiary. The proxy must have a valid South African ID and must be at least 18 years old. There is no fee involved. SASSA does not appoint or recommend proxies — the beneficiary chooses their own.
Documents the SASSA proxy must bring
- The proxy’s own 13-digit bar-coded South African ID
- A copy of the beneficiary’s South African ID
- A signed SASSA proxy letter from the beneficiary authorising the collection
- Where relevant, a medical certificate confirming the beneficiary cannot attend in person
Postbank home visit for bedridden beneficiaries
If the beneficiary is bedridden and cannot have a proxy attend on their behalf, Postbank offers a home visit programme for the SASSA Black Card replacement. Phone the Postbank helpline on 0800 53 54 55 to request a home visit. The service is free.
When the SASSA proxy procedure does not apply
The SASSA proxy procedure is for one-off collections such as a new card. For ongoing grant payment collection, the beneficiary should consider switching their grant payment to a personal bank account or to a household member’s bank account where appropriate.
