SASSA grant cancellation is the official process for ending a grant when a beneficiary’s circumstances change and they no longer qualify, or no longer need the support. A SASSA grant cancellation is required by law if you start earning above the means test threshold, return to employment, recover from a temporary disability or no longer have a foster child in your care. Failing to cancel a grant you no longer qualify for can lead to fraud charges and the repayment of past grant amounts.
When you must cancel a SASSA grant
- You start earning above the means test threshold for your grant
- You return to permanent employment
- You recover from a temporary disability and no longer meet the medical criteria
- A foster child returns to a biological parent or turns 18 without being in school
- You no longer reside in South Africa
- You wish to end the grant voluntarily
How to apply for a SASSA grant cancellation
Visit your nearest SASSA office in person and request a grant cancellation form. A SASSA official will assist you to complete it. You will need to bring your 13-digit bar-coded South African ID, your SASSA Postbank Black Card, and any documents that support the reason for cancellation, such as a letter of employment, an income statement or a death certificate (if cancelling on behalf of a deceased beneficiary).
SASSA grant cancellation after a beneficiary’s death
When a SASSA beneficiary passes away, their grant must be cancelled. Family members or the appointed executor must report the death to SASSA as soon as possible. Bring the deceased’s ID, the death certificate, and your own ID to the nearest SASSA office. Continuing to draw a grant after a beneficiary’s death is fraud.
What happens after SASSA grant cancellation
Once SASSA processes the cancellation, payments stop from the next payment cycle. If you cancel partway through a month, that month’s payment may still be made because grants are paid in advance. If you decide you qualify again in the future, you must reapply from scratch — see our SASSA reapplication guide.
