The City of Cape Town remains committed to completing the Bayside Canal upgrade in Milnerton. However, work on-site has been temporarily suspended due to a contractual dispute. Efforts are ongoing to resolve the issue and resume construction as soon as possible.

The project began in November 2023. It is a crucial step in addressing stormwater management challenges in the area. Rapid urban development has increased stormwater flow, especially during peak periods. As a result, upgrading the canal is essential. Additionally, the project aims to reduce pollution affecting the Rietvlei.

In November 2024, the appointed civil contractor officially suspended operations due to contractual concerns. Despite this, significant progress had already been made. The project had passed the halfway mark before work was halted.

The remaining work includes constructing the upgraded stormwater canal. This will connect to the primary sedimentation ponds. Additionally, the bypass canal will link the secondary treatment channel to the Rietvlei. These improvements are key to enhancing water quality in the area.

Councillor Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, reassured residents. He emphasized the City’s dedication to completing the project. ‘Upgrading the Bayside Canal is a critical investment. It will improve water quality in the Rietvlei and surrounding areas. While legal processes are ongoing, we remain committed to resuming work with minimal delays.’

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the project’s progress. Updates will be shared as soon as new developments arise. The City appreciates the community’s patience and support during this time.
