Free State police have foiled an alleged Welkom cash-in-transit bombing plot after intercepting three suspects on the Virginia road on 18 May 2026. The suspects, aged 39, 41 and 45, are expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court this week.

Police members deployed in the Lejweleputswa District acted on information received from Thabong Crime Intelligence, intercepting the suspects as they walked toward the Virginia CBD with a bag allegedly containing explosives.
The two men and one woman are accused of having intended to sell the explosives to a buyer who planned to use them in a cash-in-transit attack. None of the three accepted responsibility for the explosives when questioned. SAPS confirmed investigations are ongoing and called on the public to report any further information.
