Wendy Lucas-Bull currently serves as the chairperson of Shoprite Holdings, South Africa’s largest retailer, with a market capitalisation of approximately R175 billion. She assumed the role on November 16, 2020, succeeding long-standing Chairman Christo Wiese.
Lucas-Bull brings a wealth of experience from her tenure at notable institutions like ABSA, FirstRand, and Eskom. At ABSA, she was chairperson from April 2013 to March 2022, overseeing the bank’s transition from Barclays Africa back into ABSA. She also witnessed leadership with several CEOs during her time there.
Her previous roles include being an Executive Director at Rand Merchant Bank Holdings and Chief Executive of FirstRand Retail, managing prominent brands like First National Bank, WesBank and Outsurance. She has also served on the boards of various companies, including Nedbank, Eskom, Discovery Holdings and co-founded Peotona Group Holdings, a women’s investment group.
Shoprite, under Lucas-Bull’s chairmanship, continues to thrive, with recent revenues nearing R250 billion. Its Checkers Sixty60 delivery service highlights the group’s adaptability. However, concerns over the safety and hiring practices for Sixty60 drivers have emerged. Lucas-Bull acknowledged these issues, noting efforts to recruit and train South African drivers.
