EASTERN CAPE. – Yvonne Brouwers (29) was sentenced in the Nxuba Regional Court (formerly Cradock) for her crimes after she fatally stabbed Thembisile Mondo in 2023 and, while out on bail in 2024, struck her stepmother Nontsokolo Mthathi with a mug, causing her death.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Luxolo Tyali confirmed that Brouwers was given an effective ten years for Mondo’s murder and six years for Mthathi’s culpable homicide, with sentences to be served concurrently.
Brouwers told the court she confronted Mondo at his home on 1 February 2023 because he had allegedly slapped her child. The situation escalated, and Mondo allegedly brought out a knife to stab her. She managed to take the knife and fatally stabbed him once. Brouwers informed neighbors of the incident, but they didn’t believe her, nor did they inform authorities immediately. Mondo’s body was discovered the next day, and Brouwers was arrested.
On 25 February, Brouwers struck her stepmother, Nontsokolo Mthathi, over the head with a mug during an argument. Mthathi was initially treated in the hospital but later died due to complications from internal bleeding in her skull.
During sentencing, state prosecutor Makabongwe Seyibokse said that despite Brouwers’ guilty plea, the severity and brutality of the crimes had to be taken into account.
Barry Madolo, the provincial director of public prosecutions, welcomed the sentence.
