South Africa’s Under-18 rugby team has continued its impressive run in the current U18 International Series. They are heading into the final round as one of the standout sides in the tournament.
The series, being staged in the Western Cape, brings together some of the most promising young rugby players from South Africa, England, Ireland, France and Georgia. The tournament provides an important international testing ground for players.
South Africa made an emphatic start to the series with a commanding 52-7 victory over France at Durbanville High School. The hosts took control early in the match and held a 21-7 advantage at half-time before turning up the pressure in the second half.
Captain and No 8 Jacobus de Villiers was among the players who led from the front, while Lamla Mgedezi crossed the line twice as the South Africans produced a powerful attacking display.
The victory was followed by another convincing performance when South Africa defeated Ireland 51-15 at Boland Landbou near Wellington.
Once again, the South Africans dominated the physical exchanges and were particularly effective in the set pieces and on attack. They scored four tries in the first half and, although Ireland showed greater resistance after the break, the hosts regained control in the closing stages.
Charles Whitehead scored twice, while Stefan van der Vyver and Clement Makelele were also among the try-scorers in another dominant display by the South African side.
After two rounds, South Africa had scored an impressive 103 points while conceding only 22, underlining both their attacking strength and defensive discipline.
The SA Under-18 A side has also enjoyed a successful campaign. They opened their tournament with a thrilling 32-31 victory over Ireland, before producing a strong defensive display to beat Georgia 20-0 in their second outing.
The victory over Georgia was particularly encouraging, with the South Africans keeping their opponents scoreless and demonstrating the depth of talent available within the country’s youth rugby structures.
The series reaches its conclusion with a final round of matches, with the highly anticipated clash between South Africa and England expected to provide one of the highlights of the tournament.
England have also shown their attacking potential during the series and will provide a stern test for the South African side. The match offers the hosts the opportunity to complete the tournament with a third consecutive victory and underline their status as one of the leading teams in the competition.
The performances of both South African teams have once again highlighted the depth of talent emerging from the country’s school rugby system. With a combination of physicality, skill, pace and a strong set-piece platform, the young South Africans have set the standard throughout the series.
While the immediate focus will be on finishing the tournament strongly, the U18 International Series is about far more than results. For many of these players, it represents an important step on the pathway towards higher honours.
Several members of the current squads will undoubtedly be hoping to use their performances in the Western Cape as a springboard towards selection for provincial teams, the Junior Springboks and eventually the Springbok jersey.
For now, however, South Africa’s young rugby stars have the chance to finish the series on a high and provide another reminder that the future of South African rugby remains in promising hands.
