Cape Town’s anti-litter mascot, Bingo, and his team driver fell victim to a hijacking incident in Gugulethu on 27 February 2025. This shocking event is the latest in a series of attacks on City of Cape Town officials and workers.

The hijacking occurred while the driver was en route to collect the team for an upcoming school visit. The perpetrators stole the Toyota Quantum van transporting the Bingo costume, leaving the City’s Urban Waste Management team to deal with yet another setback in their community outreach efforts. Fortunately, no physical harm came to the driver, who has since been offered counselling to process the traumatic experience.

Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious of possible scams involving a fake Bingo mascot. All legitimate bookings for Bingo should be confirmed through the City of Cape Town to prevent fraudulent activities. Verify Bingo bookings here

‘This latest attack highlights the dangers faced by Urban Waste Management staff and other City officials while they work to uplift communities,’ said Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management. ‘Bingo has played a crucial role in promoting environmental awareness, especially among Cape Town’s young children. His presence at schools generates excitement and inspires positive action. It is unacceptable that even such a beloved character is not safe from crime.’

The City has warned that the hijacking may cause disruptions to the school engagement programme, and affected institutions will be informed directly. Officials regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate residents’ understanding and support during this time.

Anyone with information regarding the stolen vehicle, the Bingo costume, or those responsible for the crime is urged to report it to SAPS immediately.
