The Springbok Sevens believe mental focus will decide their fortunes at the second HSBC SVNS World Championship event this weekend, with veteran Philip Snyman saying the squad is physically ready for the challenge in Valladolid, Spain.
The Blitzboks play two Pool A matches on Friday, against Great Britain and Kenya, before facing Australia on Saturday at the Estadio Jose Zorrilla.
Focus on themselves
Snyman said the team had identified key focus points heading into the tournament. “We will need to play as a team where every individual delivers his best effort,” he said. “One of those is to focus on ourselves and what we need to do, and not the opponents as such.”
While the squad is aware they are well placed to win both the SVNS Series and the World Championship, Snyman said preparations had centred on a fresh start rather than the bigger picture, with the opening match against Great Britain the immediate priority.
