Brig. Adriaan Jacobus "Attie" Lamprecht (59), head of the police Stop Crime call centre, has received the Sherpa Award for Whistleblower Support at this year's whistleblower awards ceremony of Public Interest SA.

Col. Amanda van Wyk, national police spokesperson, says Gen Fannie Masemola, the national police commissioner, congratulated Lamprecht on the award in recognition of his contribution to anonymous crime reporting and the protection of people who report crime.

Lamprecht has 42 years of service in the police and has been heading the Stop Crime call centre at 08600 10111 for more than 30 years, where members of the public can report information about crime anonymously. He also oversees at national level the unit for harmful and occult crimes and the Bureau for Missing Persons, which he established in 1994. According to the police, information received through Stop Crime has over the years contributed to thousands of arrests and the seizure of illegal goods and other crime assets worth hundreds of millions of rands.

Lamprecht also serves as director of Crime Stoppers International and previously managed the witness protection programme when it was under police control. He holds a doctorate in sociology.
