Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa has signed the new Public Service Commission Act which strengthens the body's role in monitoring the public service.
According to the South African government the new act replaces the Public Service Commission Act of 1997.
The Public Service Commission is an independent constitutional body which can investigate, among other things, administrative practices and service delivery problems.
It also gives the Commission the power to require a relevant executive authority or other person to report on progress with implementing its decisions.
Anyone who obstructs the Commission from carrying out its work can be found guilty of an offence and be imposed a fine of up to R50 000, imprisonment of up to 12 months, or both.
