Who qualifies for NSFAS in 2026

NSFAS funds South African citizens and permanent residents who are registered, or planning to register, at a public university or TVET college in South Africa. The financial eligibility criteria are:

  • Combined household income under R350 000 per year, OR
  • Household income under R600 000 per year for students with a registered disability
  • No previous NSFAS funding to complete the same qualification level (no double-funding)

NSFAS uses “household” income, defined as the income of all wage-earners contributing to the student’s primary residence. SARS records, payslips and affidavits are used to verify income. Misrepresenting household income is grounds for funding withdrawal and recovery of funds already paid.

How to apply for NSFAS 2026

Online application is the only route. NSFAS no longer accepts in-person or paper applications.

  • Go to nsfas.org.za

NSFAS supporting documents

You will need:

  • Certified copy of your South African ID, or birth certificate if under 16

  • Latest payslips OR a sworn affidavit if unemployed (for all household wage earners)
  • Latest three-month bank statements
  • Proof of residence
  • Vulnerable Child Declaration if applicable
  • Disability annexure for the disability funding stream

Documents must be certified at a SAPS station, Post Office, or by a commissioner of oaths within the last six months. Uncertified or expired certifications are rejected.

NSFAS 2026 deadlines and key dates

NSFAS opens applications in late August or early September of the year before the academic year starts. The 2026 application window typically runs from September 2025 to January 2026. The exact closing date is published on nsfas.org.za each year.

Late applications are sometimes accepted at NSFAS’s discretion, particularly for students who only confirmed university or TVET registration after the main window closed. Check the NSFAS website for late-application provisions.

Funding decisions are released in stages from December onwards as student records are verified against household income data from SARS, the Department of Home Affairs and the Department of Higher Education and Training.

NSFAS 2026 allowances

For students at public universities, NSFAS covers:

  • Full tuition fees, paid directly to the institution
  • Registration fee
  • Accommodation, paid to accredited residences or private landlords
  • Transport for students living off-campus
  • Learning materials allowance, paid to the student
  • Personal care allowance, a smaller monthly amount

For TVET college students, NSFAS covers tuition, transport, accommodation (for students living more than 40 km from the college), a personal care allowance and an incidental allowance.

Allowance amounts are reviewed and announced each year by the Department of Higher Education and Training. The 2026 allowance figures are published on nsfas.org.za and on the Department’s website.

What to do if your NSFAS application is rejected

Common rejection reasons include household income above the threshold, failed academic eligibility, a duplicate funding application for the same qualification, or missing supporting documents.

The appeal process:

  • Log in to myNSFAS
  • Navigate to “Track Funding Progress”
  • Click “Submit Appeal”
  • Upload supporting evidence — updated income proof, an academic appeal letter from your institution, medical records as relevant
  • Submit before the appeals deadline

Appeal outcomes are published in your myNSFAS account, typically within 30 days of submission.

Frequently asked questions

Q: How much does NSFAS pay students in 2026?
A: NSFAS covers full tuition, accommodation, transport, learning materials and a personal care allowance for qualifying students at public universities and TVET colleges. The exact rand amount per allowance is set annually by the Department of Higher Education and Training and published on nsfas.org.za.

Q: Can I apply for NSFAS if my parents earn more than R350 000?
A: The standard household income threshold is R350 000 per year. Students with a registered disability are eligible up to R600 000 per year of household income. Above the threshold, students may qualify for the NSFAS missing middle student loan, which has separate criteria.

Q: Do I need to reapply to NSFAS every year?
A: No. Once funded, NSFAS continues funding for the duration of your qualification provided you meet academic progression rules and household income remains below the threshold. NSFAS reviews income annually.

Q: What is the NSFAS missing middle student loan?
A: A separate scheme for students with household income between R350 000 and R600 000 per year — the “missing middle.” The loan is repayable after graduation. It is administered through NSFAS but with its own eligibility and approval criteria.

Q: When does NSFAS pay allowances each month?
A: NSFAS pays student allowances directly to the student’s NSFAS-issued cellphone wallet or bank account from mid-February of each academic year, on a monthly cycle aligned to the academic calendar. Confirm payment dates in your myNSFAS account.
