NSFAS application deadlines: key 2026 dates to know
Missing the NSFAS application deadlines is one of the most common reasons students go without funding. The 2026 cycle has fixed dates for the main university intake, multiple TVET windows, and a strict appeals cut-off that does not accept extensions.
Main 2026 application window
NSFAS applications for the 2026 academic year opened on 15 September 2025 and closed on 15 November 2025. All funding decisions for 2026 were completed by 31 December 2025, and initial outcomes for first-time entering students were released from 15 December 2025.
TVET application cycles for 2026
TVET colleges run multiple intakes during the year. The published 2026 dates include:
- Trimester 2: opened 6 May 2026 and closed 18 May 2026
- Semester 2 and Occupational Programmes (2nd intake): 1 July 2026 to 17 July 2026
- Trimester 3: 3 September 2026 to 14 September 2026
Appeals deadline
For students rejected in the main 2026 cycle, the appeal deadline was 14 January 2026, with outcomes released from 16 February 2026. Late appeals are not accepted. See the full NSFAS appeal process for what to submit.
Where to apply
All applications are submitted online through the myNSFAS portal. Students without internet access can apply at NYDA branches or Thusong Service Centres. Check the NSFAS status check 2026 guide once you have applied.
