NSFAS appeal process: how to appeal a rejection in 2026
The NSFAS appeal process gives students whose applications were rejected a second chance to secure funding. NSFAS streamlined the appeals route for 2026, opening the window as soon as outcomes are communicated and setting strict deadlines.
According to NSFAS Board Chairperson Dr Mugwena Maluleke, the 2026 appeals window opened immediately as application outcomes were released, with the final deadline set for 14 January 2026 and outcomes communicated by 16 February 2026. Students must submit all supporting documentation within 30 days of their outcome notification.
Who can appeal
You may appeal if your application was rejected for reasons that can be corrected, such as outdated household income data, a change in family circumstances or missing documents. Appeals are not accepted where the rejection reason is final, such as fraud or falsified documents.
How to submit an NSFAS appeal
Appeals are submitted online only, through the myNSFAS portal. Log in, open the appeal option on your profile, write a short factual reason that directly addresses the rejection, upload the supporting documents, and submit. Email appeals are not accepted.
Documents you may need
Common supporting documents include a certified ID copy for you and household members, recent payslips or proof of unemployment, an updated affidavit on changed household circumstances, a death certificate where a breadwinner has passed away, and a medical report for disability-related appeals.
What happens next
Track the appeal status on the myNSFAS portal. While the appeal is pending, no allowances are paid; if your appeal succeeds, funding is processed and registration fees may be reimbursed. Read the full NSFAS status check 2026 guide to monitor progress.
