NSFAS for TVET students 2026: funding, allowances and dates

NSFAS for TVET students 2026 covers tuition at all 50 public TVET colleges, plus allowances for accommodation, transport, meals, personal care and learning materials. Funding rules differ from the university stream, particularly on how allowances are paid.

Who qualifies

To qualify, a student must be a South African citizen, registered or intending to register for a PLP, NC(V) or Report 191 programme at a public TVET college, and meet the NSFAS financial eligibility rules. SASSA grant recipients automatically qualify on income grounds.

Allowances for TVET students

NSFAS pays TVET allowances directly into students’ personal bank accounts. Colleges may not receive allowances on a student’s behalf. The accommodation allowance for TVET students is tiered by location, with separate caps for urban, peri-urban and rural areas. Students who commute receive a transport allowance instead.

Payment dates

The first TVET allowance disbursement for 2026 was paid on 13 February 2026, with a second on 27 February 2026, after consultation with the Department of Higher Education and Training. From April 2026, TVET allowances generally pay monthly, subject to colleges submitting valid registration data on time.
