LIMPOPO. – A police sergeant (39) was found dead on Thursday morning, hours after allegedly shooting his wife (35). The woman was declared dead at the scene on Wednesday 21 October after emergency services were called.

Col. Malesela Ledwaba, police spokesperson in Limpopo, says police opened a murder case and launched a search for the suspect after he allegedly fled the scene in a white Isuzu bakkie. Information was received on Thursday at around 06:30 that the vehicle had been spotted on the roadside in the Botshabelo area, within the Tom Burke police precinct. Police found the sergeant's body with a gunshot wound to the head beneath a marula tree, approximately 100 m from the bakkie. His state-issued firearm was beside him.

An inquest has been opened. The motive is still unknown, but domestic violence has not been ruled out. Lt. Gen. Jan Scheepers, provincial police commissioner in Limpopo, condemned the incident as a case of gender-based violence and femicide. The investigation is ongoing.
