Andrea Johnson has been appointed as the new National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate (ID). The announcement was made by the presidency on Monday evening. Advocate Johnson’s new position comes into effect as from the 1st of March.
President Ramaphosa said Johnson takes on the new position during a very important time in the country as those implicated in corruption and state capture must be dealt with decisively. The NPA has been accused of not acting decisively against those who have been involved in the looting of state funds.

There has been a media frenzy as Johnson begins to work in her new position. Johnson, the current deputy director of the NPA, has more than 25 years of experience and has managed to bring down the big names. She played a pivotal role in the prosecutions of Jacki Selebe, the former police chief and Oscar Pistorius, the disgraced Paralympian who killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
In 2018 Johnson was competing for the NPA’s top job, but Shamila Bathohi, who was the successful candidate, was appointed. Johnson currently serves on the NPA Task Force that will be overseeing the implementation of the State Capture Report. Her role will be to pursue some of the cases which have been identified in the commission.
The president has also appointed the new head at the State Security Agency. Tembisile Majola, who was an ambassador, will now take up the position of director general at the SSA. Majola is a former deputy minister of Energy and South Africa’s ambassador to Senegal
