Pretoria is gearing up for an exciting new mass participation event! The RUN WITH ZOLA 5km Fun Run/Walk is set to take place on 28 June 2025 at the Harlequins Rugby Club. This unique event not only celebrates the legendary Zola Budd, but also raises awareness about gender-based violence (GBV).
A tribute to a sporting icon
Zola Budd is a global sporting legend. The barefoot running prodigy set multiple world records and became a symbol of South Africa’s complex past.
“This initiative is about uniting the country,” says event media manager Ray de Vries, a renowned coach who has worked with 14 Comrades winners. “Everyone can run or walk 5km. It’s about paying tribute to Zola, embracing the human spirit, and standing together against GBV.”
A perfect venue for a special event
According to De Vries, Harlequins Rugby Club is an ideal location. It offers ample parking, world-class facilities, and is centrally located in Pretoria. The event is expected to draw well-known personalities, making it a memorable occasion.
“Zola’s influence stretches across the globe,” he adds. “She is an exceptional brand ambassador, coach, and mentor. Having her lead this event is an incredible opportunity.”
A run for everyone
Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a beginner, RUN WITH ZOLA welcomes all.
“Wheelchairs, crutches, and especially bare feet are encouraged!” says De Vries. “This is about celebrating the joy of movement and unity. GBV is a serious issue in South Africa, and we hope this event brings awareness and support for those affected.”
