Recognising the signs of ovulation is one of the most useful steps for anyone trying to conceive or simply tracking their cycle. Ovulation usually happens around the middle of a typical menstrual cycle, but the body gives several reliable clues.
Most women ovulate roughly 14 days before their next period. The fertile window is the five days leading up to ovulation, plus ovulation day itself.
Changes in cervical mucus
One of the clearest signs of ovulation is cervical mucus that becomes clear, stretchy and slippery, similar to raw egg white. This change helps sperm travel and indicates peak fertility.
A shift in basal body temperature
Basal body temperature rises by roughly 0.3 to 0.5 degrees Celsius after ovulation. Tracking it daily over a few cycles reveals a clear pattern.
Mild pelvic pain
Some women feel a brief, one-sided ache known as mittelschmerz on the day of ovulation. It is harmless and a useful signal.
Other indicators
Increased libido, breast tenderness, light spotting and a heightened sense of smell can also accompany ovulation. Ovulation predictor kits, which detect a luteinising hormone surge, confirm timing more precisely.
