KWAZULU-NATAL. – Two people, a man and a woman, were shot dead on Thursday afternoon when a group taking part in a door-to-door political campaign was allegedly attacked in Area 24 in Umgababa. Police have opened two murder charges and three attempted murder charges.

Col. Robert Netshiunda, police spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal, says the group, consisting of two women, a man and their two bodyguards, was approached from behind by a white Isuzu bakkie. The occupants of the bakkie allegedly opened fire on the group with rifles and pistols. A man and a woman were declared dead at the scene, while one of the women allegedly injured her leg as she tried to run away. The two bodyguards fled the scene and had not been traced according to the information available.

The motive for the shooting is unknown. Police do not rule out political intolerance.
