The City of Cape Town has proposed upgrades to non-motorised transport (NMT) infrastructure in Wesbank, Blackheath, and Blue Downs. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to submit their comments before Friday, 7 March 2025.

Planned upgrades and benefits

The project aims to enhance mobility and safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Key upgrades include:

  • Improving and maintaining NMT facilities to ensure universal accessibility.
  • Installing dropped kerbs and tactile ground surface indicators for visually impaired individuals.
  • Enhancing pedestrian crossings with shorter distances, clearer signage and improved road markings.
  • Introducing protected cycle lanes where possible.

These improvements will create safer and more efficient routes for all road users.

City officials call for public participation

Councillor Rob Quintas, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, emphasised the importance of community feedback. He stated, “We have identified the need for better infrastructure in these areas. This project aims to improve road safety for residents. We urge the public to review the proposals and share their input.”

The upgrades will cover several key roads, including Hindle Road, Bentley Crescent, and Bardale Road. Other affected routes include Silversands Main Road, Wesbank Main Road and Marthinus van Schalkwyk Road.
