GAUTENG. – David Motsamai (35) and Lufu Mulaudzi (39), home affairs officials, appeared in the Germiston magistrate's court on Tuesday after they allegedly used South African citizens' identity details to process passport applications for foreign nationals.

According to Magaboke Mohlatlole, NPA spokesperson, the matter stems from Project Humulani, an investigation that began in 2021 regarding an investigation into alleged fraud involving South African passports. The accused worked at the department's office in Germiston and are facing various counts of fraud. The state alleges that photographs on the documents were allegedly replaced with those of foreign nationals so that they could obtain South African passports under false pretences. Motsamai and Mulaudzi are accused of being involved in the alleged fraud together with other persons. According to the NPA, some of these persons have not yet been identified.

The two men were each released on bail of R5 000. The matter has been postponed to 26 October for transfer to the regional court. They are also facing alternative charges relating to alleged breaches of immigration legislation.
