Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) is captivating skywatchers across South Africa, offering a celestial spectacle that has left many in awe. This non-periodic comet, which reached its closest point to the Sun, known as perihelion, on January 13, 2025. It is potentially the brightest comet of the year. With an apparent magnitude of −3.8 at perihelion, it has become a must-see event.

One of the places that caught a glimpse of this cosmic marvel was near the Hangklip Lighthouse in Kleinmond, Western Cape. The clear, dark skies provided an ideal backdrop for stargazers and photographers alike. It is a popular spot for comet enthusiasts.

In Mbombela (Nelspruit), Mpumalanga, the comet’s brilliance has been evident even with the city lights. “Even with all the lights from the city, it was clearly visible with the naked eye,” said an excited observer from Newcastle, South Africa.

If you want to see comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) then you are going to need to find somewhere with a clear, unobstructed view of the horizon. Using a planetarium app or website like Stellarium will allow you to work out what time the Sun and the comet will set from your location. This will allow you to plan your observations.

Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) was discovered in April 2024 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS).
