The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape welcomes the findings of the Auditor General, in which for the third year in a row, every Western Cape Government (WCG) department and entity has achieved an unqualified audit — demonstrating a remarkable record of clean, transparent, and accountable governance. This sustained performance highlights the province’s commitment to ensuring that every rand of public money is managed responsibly and used to improve the lives of residents.

Across all 14 departments and 11 entities, no material misstatements were identified, and financial statements were submitted on time and of consistently high quality. This demonstrates a mature system of internal controls where good governance is institutionalised rather than reactive.

Other than being an accounting achievement, clean audits have a direct impact on the WCG’s ability to deliver services and grow the economy. Between 2020 and 2025, the province created 89% of all net new jobs in South Africa, with unemployment falling to 21.2% in the second quarter of 2025, the lowest in the country. The number of small businesses has grown from 330 000 to 404 000 in the past two years, supported by stable governance, credible financial management, and an enabling business environment.

The Auditor-General’s findings affirm that public money in the Western Cape is spent as intended — on essential services, infrastructure, and the people of the province. Strong financial performance also enhances the province’s credibility with investors and development partners, further strengthening its ability to fund growth and infrastructure.

The DA will continue to support measures that promote and internalise good governance and financial practices. The policies and controls implemented by the WCG should serve as a blueprint to other provincial legislatures that are struggling to achieve clean audits. Good governance should be expected, not a luxury.

Leon van Wyk, MPP, DA Western Cape Spokesperson on Finance, said: “Clean audits are not a box-ticking exercise, they reflect a government that works. Through sound financial management and a culture of accountability, the Western Cape Government has proven that fiscal integrity translates into better services, stronger communities, and faster economic growth. This is what the DA means when we say good governance delivers.”
