WES-KAAP. – Ruben Louw van Rooyen (18), ‘n leerling van Hoërskool DF Malan in Bellville, wat Woensdag na ‘n lang stryd met kanker gesterf het, het almal wat met hom in aanraking gekom het, geïnspireer. Hy het elke dag geleef asof dit sy laaste dag is.
Ruben is volgens ‘n sosialemediaplasing van Mari en Ryno van Rooyen, sy ouers, in 2022 met ‘n skaars soort kanker, alveolêre rabdomiosarkoom, gediagnoseer. Nadat hy in remissie was, het die kanker hervat en het hy op 22 Januarie vanjaar ‘n lang operasie om die kanker te verwyder, ondergaan. Die kanker is verwyder, maar daar was egter komplikasies wat tot totale dermversaking gelei het.
Op Vrydag 14 Maart het van DF Malan se leerlinge vir Ruben met ‘n Interkaap-bus by die Life Vincent Palotti-hospitaal gaan sing. Kyk dit hier. Vier dae later het Ruben die dapper besluit geneem om sy laaste oomblikke tuis by sy gesin en sy geliefde kat, Sammy, deur te bring.
Hoërskool DF Malan skryf op sosiale media: “Ons liefste Ruben. Vandag moet ons met ‘n swaar hart vir jou kom groet, maar jy is Huis toe en daarvoor het ons berusting in ons harte. Jy het jou hele pad, hand aan hand met mense van regoor die wêreld geloop, maar hoofsaaklik met jou hand stewig geanker in die Here. Vandag loop Hy en al sy engele om jou waar jy na jou ewige huis toe gaan. Jy wou so graag ‘n impak gemaak het, Ruben, jy HET! Jou menswees, hart en jou glimlag, Ruben, deur elke moeilike en opdraande stryd, sal ons altyd inspireer om na die mooi te kyk wat daar buite is, om elke geleentheid aan te gryp, asof dit jou laaste is. Jy het die spreekwoord dat jy een lewe het en dit moet leef, versinnebeeld en ons sal ons bes probeer om altyd in jou voetspore te volg en die lewe voluit te leef! Tot ons mekaar weer sien, liefste Ruben!
