As part of the Ministerial tour of the country to determine the state of readiness to provide policing and stop the spread of Covid-19, Deputy Minister of Police Hon Cassel Mathale visited the Free State on 2 April 2020.

He was accompanied by Police National Commissioner General Khehla Sitole and Deputy National Commissioner for Detection Lt General Mfazi. In the Free State, they were joined by Premier Me Sisi Ntombela, MEC for Police, Roads and Transport Mr Sam Mashinini,  Members of the Provincial Executive Council, HODs, and Police Provincial Commissioner Lt General Baile Motswenyane and her team and Mangaung Metro Mayor, Me Olly Mlamleli.

They started at the Twin City Mall in Heidedal – Mangaung to inspect a multi-dimensional parade comprising members the SAPS, SANDF, traffic, health officials, Managaung Metro law enforcement, and customs officials. After dismissal of the parade,  the Deputy Minister and his entourage moved into the mall where compliance with disaster management regulations (social distance, sanitizers placed at strategic points, face masks, gloves) was checked, first at Boxer supermarket and then nearby shops. This was followed by a briefing session on the spread of the virus in the Free State which was held at police headquarters in Bloemfontein. Another shop was visited thereafter; Boxer supermarket at Central Park. A tour of the CBD leading to the taxi rank was also embarked upon. Taxi operators’ compliance to imposed restrictions on the number of passengers and availability of protective equipment was checked.

The principals’ motorcade then headed for the N8 between Free State and Lesotho where two base camps were inspected to ascertain readiness and ensure that all necessary role players are participating. The last stop was at Maserubridge Land Port of Entry where compliance (no movement of persons across the border) was checked.
