SASSA SIU fraud investigation: what beneficiaries should know
The SASSA SIU fraud story has been in the public eye since two Stellenbosch University computer science students, Joel Cedras and Veer Gosai, presented findings of vulnerabilities in the SRD R370 grant system to the Portfolio Committee on Social Development in October 2024.
What the students found
The students identified a number of weaknesses in the SRD application and payment system. Their findings were later substantiated by an independent investigation conducted by external auditors Masegare and Associates, as confirmed by SASSA at the time.
The SIU mandate
The Special Investigating Unit has a standing mandate to investigate corruption, malpractice and maladministration at SASSA under Presidential Proclamation R.37 of 2019. This is the authority under which SIU SASSA investigations have proceeded, including a 2021 prosecution of four Eastern Cape businessmen accused of defrauding SASSA of more than R2 million.
What this means for beneficiaries
SASSA has tightened verification across all grants. According to the 2026 Budget Review, the agency now runs monthly database checks against SARS, UIF, NSFAS and Home Affairs, with biometric enrolment for new applicants. Tighter checks can also lead to more declines for legitimate applicants. The recourse remains a reconsideration through the SRD portal, then a formal appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals.
